SUMMARY

The Career Advisor provides career/guidance activities for high school students through educational planning, goal setting, academic & career advising, and transition services. The Career Counselor explores and evaluates students' education, training, work history, interests, skills and personality traits, including utilizing formal assessments to ensure that students select the educational programming that best meets their transition goals. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Provides academic advising and assistance with course selection based upon the student need while monitoring academic progress.
  • Provides training opportunities, activities, workshops and information about college readiness, course selection, transition-related supplemental education services, career planning and more, to students, staff and parents.
  • Assists and collaborates with the transition team in providing resources and services.
  • Collaborates with various departments to ensure specific program/project needs (ie Academic Achievement Record Committee (AAR)), Parent Liaison meetings, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors for VR services, public relations and outreach.
  • Coordinates dual credit opportunities with participating colleges and principals, while informing families and eligible students.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings, ARDs and Review of Existing Evaluation Data (REEDIs
  • to collaborate with teachers, administrators and service providers in support of student needs for all gth-12th grade students.
  • Develops, writes and implements 9th-12th grade Individualized Transition Plans (ITP) as a part of a students IEP or 504.
  • Monitors and modifies program implementation of activities, as needed ,to meet program goals and objectives defined by the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)and/or the Strategic Goal Team (SGT).
  • Completes Informal and formal assessments to evaluate students abilities, interests and skills including but not limited to developing and maintaining Personal Graduation Plans (PGP).
  • Leads and facilitates financial aide completion as it pertains to Texas HB 3 Graduation Requirements.
  • Coordinates the dissemination of information and follow up activities including applications, timelines, admission requirements, essays for students to seek admission to colleges and other post- secondary programs.
  • Coordinate the TSD scholarship program including maintaining communication with scholarship donors.
  • Maintain the High School/ CTE Catalog.
  • Provides exceptional customer service for TSD & Community stakeholders with intentional and professional practices that promote a culture of respect and focus on achieving equitable outcomes.
  • May have Summer scheduled assignments based on department need.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in counseling, guidance/school counseling, vocational rehabilitation, deaf education, special education, or related field
  2. One years of professional experience providing career and transition planning for high school students.
  3. Sign Language: The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) is ADVANCED.

 

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Certification as a Guidance Counselor by the State Board for Educator Certification
  2. Three years of experience working as a counselor or career counselor in a high school setting serving deaf students
  3. Experience developing and delivering training programs related to academic success, college, career and/or transition planning
  4. Experience embedding video instruction into a lesson plan or training presentation
  5. Experience providing ACT and/or SAT prep programs
  6. Experience coordinating a conference or fair
  7. Proficient sign communications skills
