TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of position: 189 day contract

Hours: 7:30 A.M-4:00 P.M. Hours may vary

 

SUMMARY

Teaches CTE Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) related classes to Deaf students. Develops engaging, hands-on instruction that helps prepare students for college-level coursework or competitive employment in engineering, programming, computing, or related fields.  Modifies instruction to meet student needs. Emphasizes marketable job skills as an integral part of the classroom experience. Other CTE classes may be added or substituted on an as needed basis.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Provides classroom instruction to deaf students using a variety of teaching strategies. 
  2. Plans, develops, presents, and modifies curricula to meet student needs. Submits lesson plans per department requirements.
  3. Establishes ongoing, collaborative relationships with local colleges and employers to ensure that our curriculum adequately prepares our students to excel in college-coursework or jobs related to STEM, or related fields.
  4. Delivers STEM-oriented instruction (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) through project-based learning methods. Able to teach all levels of Robotics and Computer Technology. 
  5. Serves as an Advisory Teacher/Advocate for assigned students. Participates in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.

Classroom Management and Organization:

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Other:

  • Assists and identifies selection of curriculum, resources books, equipment, and other instructional materials with the assistance of the CTE administrative team.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly to students, parents, and staff.
  • Participate in staff development activities that improve job-related skills and professional growth.
  • Participates in the faculty evaluation system.
  • Uses technology for teaching/learning process.
  • Keeps informed of and complies with federal, state, and TSD school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records and other documents required.
  • Attends and participates in faculty team meetings and serves on staff committee meetings as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Science, Math, Information Technology or a closely related field or an Associate of Arts degree with 5 years experience in the appropriate field or graduation from a standard High School with 7 years of experience in the appropriate field.
  2. One-year full-time classroom teaching experience.
  3. Advanced STEM-related skills and experience (computer programming, engineering, or mechanical design)
  4. Excellent writing and editing skills.
  5. Must meet State of Texas requirements for certification.  If no valid Texas teaching certificate, applicant must be able to meet requirements as required by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification for CTE assignment
  6. Sign Language: The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Signed Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) is ADVANCED. 


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Valid Texas Teacher’s Certification
  2. CTE Certification.
  3. Programming experience
  4. Working knowledge of motors, gears, and mechanical systems
  5. Working knowledge of CAD and mechanical design
  6. Working knowledge of 3D printing and various machinery
  7. Prior experience STEM teaching
  8. 5 years teaching experience.
  9. Proficient sign communications skills

  8. Interpersonal Skills—the individual maintains confidentiality, remains open to others’ ideas and exhibits willingness to try new things.
