JOB DESCRIPTION

 

SUMMARY
The DAEP/ISS Teacher primarily serves students who are assigned to Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) and In-School Suspension (ISS) at Texas School for the Deaf (TSD). The teacher follows the laws and procedures required for students in Special Education and in compliance with the Student Code of Conduct. The teacher develops, presents and modifies curricula and prepares lesson plans and instructional materials commensurate with the students’ abilities and skills and in accordance with students’ Individual Educational Plan (IEP) in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History, and self-discipline based
instruction. The teacher works in coordination with the multidisciplinary team to address students’ social emotional learning and behavior needs. The teacher will be trained in MANDT (or designated positive behavior intervention support system) and/or become a MANDT trainer. The teacher works in self- contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned. The teacher works under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Special Education/Admissions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Establishes a highly structured, well-organized classroom setting with consistent schedules and routines
  • Manages student behavior according to the IEP and/or Behavior Intervention Plan, including safely and quickly intervening and/or responding to physical student confrontations or altercations while maintaining order and discipline following the MANDT philosophy (or alternate PBIS system)
  • Plans and provides appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and technology that reflect understanding of students’ learning styles and needs
  • Works cooperatively with the multidisciplinary teams to regularly modify curricula as needed to assist students in their assignments, projects, and exams/tests
  • Remains knowledgeable about Special Education Laws and the Student Code of Conduct as they relate to DAEP and ISS
  • Prepares supplemental lesson plans consistent with the established curriculum and the needs of the students
  • Collaborates with students, parents, and other staff including instruction, student support, and residential team members to provide IEP and/or additional services and supports determined by the ARD Committee or student staffings
  • Keeps informed of and complies with federal, state, and TSD school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and other TSD staff
  • Keeps a parent apprised of student progress through parent-teacher conferences, emails and phone contacts.
  • Supports the implementation and development of Behavior Intervention Plans and behavioral accommodations for students receiving tiered services and supports
  • Works in coordination with the multidisciplinary team in providing social emotional learning and behavioral education for students receiving tiered services and supports
  • Provides additional instruction and/or support during Extended School Year (ESY) and/or alternate times identified by the district
  • Is certified in MANDT (or designated PBIS system) and/or trains relevant TSD staff in MANDT system

Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree
2. Valid Texas teaching certificate in the subject and level of assignment and appropriate
Special Education/DHH certification or the ability to obtain a valid Texas certification within the
prescribed time frame.
3. Sign Language: The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels
designated in the Signed Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) is ADVANCED.


Desirable Qualifications
1. Experience working in a Residential School for the Deaf
2. Experience working with Behavior Intervention Plans and managing students with challenging behaviors
3. Prior experience using the MANDT system or a proactive system to de-escalate student behaviors
4. Three or more years of teaching experience
5. Proficient sign communications skills
