Length of position: 12 months, year round continuous Hours: 8 AM to 5PM
SUMMARY:
Serves as a source of information and resources related to language acquisition for deaf and hard of hearing children from Birth to 22 and their families. Collaborates with the educational programs (LEAs, Charter and Private Schools and Regional Day School Programs) that serve them through the Statewide Outreach Center at Texas School for the Deaf. Connects families with national, state, regional and local resources serving them. May provide coordination and administrative support to SOC’s Family Services Programs (Intervention Care Coordination, Family Signs, Deaf Mentors and Role Models and related family services activities). Work involves referrals, technical assistance, and statewide consultations. Serves as a resource for various state agencies’ initiatives on a long-term strategic level with specialized knowledge and expertise as a subject matter expert on Deaf Education and in the area of early language learning, current teaching practices in lifelong language learning and children who are new to a language. The position entails researching best practices related to language acquisition and meeting with parents, educational program supervisors and teachers of the deaf. Works under minimal supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides training and consultation to parents and professionals regarding early language acquisition and lifelong language learning.
- Researches, prepares, and disseminates resource information designed for stakeholders (families, students and professionals).
- Consults families and professionals on strategies and resources for language development delays and language deprivation outcomes.
- Works closely with the Family Services Project manager to determine the best course of providing coordination and high level complex administrative tasks through Family Services Programs (Intervention Care Coordination, Family Signs, Deaf Mentors and Role Models and related family activities) to ensure families have a seamless entry to all available state and local resources on family support services.
- Provides technical assistance with research projects in areas of early language learning, current teaching practices in lifelong language learning and students who are new to a language.
- Coordinates assessment requests for bilingual assessments and/or conducts language assessments.
- Provides support to SOC Summer Programs for the Flagship Weekend Retreat and the FWR Team with the area of volunteers.
- Networks with parents and educational programs throughout the state via online communications, phone calls, virtual and in-person meetings, workshops, etc.
- Collaborates and presents to community and professional groups to encourage growth and improvement of statewide network for families, and to secure support from local programs.
- Represents interests, perspectives, and expertise on language & communication acquisition for planning committees, task forces, and work groups.
- Collaborates with TSD’s Early Learning Center and Admissions Office to assist prospective TSD students and families from around the State of Texas.
- Prepares administrative reports.
- Serves as a committee member to various advisory boards, universities and state agencies working on Birth to 22 strategies.
- Assists with updating and providing information for SOC publications including web and social media posts.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood, Deaf Education, Linguistics, or a related field
- Five years of experience working with families of deaf and hard of hearing children
- Thorough knowledge of communication and language assessments used for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, ages birth to 8 years.
- Knowledge of adult learning theory, family dynamics and issues related to language acquisition and deaf education.
- Proficient knowledge of computer and office software applications.
- Possess strong organization skills.
- Management and administrative skills.
- Sign Language: The required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Signed Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) is ADVANCED.
Desirable Qualifications
- Two years of experience providing outreach, project development, team building and peer support.
- Three years of experience working in a school environment with staff, administrators and parents.
- Experience with planning and providing workshops and events.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills.
- Experience using and analyzing information from a database.
- Sign Language:Signed Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) is ADVANCED-PLUS.
